Der 1914 in Dienst gestellte Lotsendampfer der Kanalverwaltung, „Pilot“, sank und riß '''5 Menschen in den Tod'''.<br /> <br /> == Einzelheiten des Unglücks ==<br /> <br /> [[Bild:1930.10.13-Pilot.jpg|thumb]]<br /> Am Sonnabend, 11.10.1930, gegen 19.15 Uhr hatte der Schiffsführer des '''Lotsendampfers „Pilot“''' (auch englische Bezeichnung für den Lotsen als solches) mehrere Schiffe mit Lotsen versorgt und wollte an seinen Liegeplatz im Vorhafen der Neuen Schleuse zurückkehren. Er kreuzte den von der Elbe einfahrenden, norwegischen '''Dampfer „Jelö“''', wurde von diesem seitlich erfaßt und zum Kentern gebracht. Der Schiffsführer des Lotsenversetzers konnte zwar noch Notsignal geben, jedoch sank der Dampfer binnen weniger Minuten.<br /> &lt;br/&gt;Ein Kanallotse, ein Maschinist sowie zwei Elblotsen konnten schwimmend das rettende Ufer erreichen. Später wurde die Südkammer der Neuen Schleuse durch die Reichskanalverwaltung gesperrt, um die Bergungsarbeiten nicht zu behindern. Dadurch bildete sich ein Rückstau der Schiffe, der sich bis Kudensee ausdehnte.<br /> &lt;br/&gt;An sämtlichen Dienstgebäuden und an den vorbeifahrenden Schiffen wurde halbmast geflaggt.<br /> &lt;br/&gt;Am nächsten Morgen traf ein Bergungsfahrzeug der Bugsier-Gesellschaft Hamburg ein um mit Hilfe der '''Schlepper „Reiher“ und „Cyclop“''' die Bergungs- und Taucherarbeiten einzuleiten.<br /> &lt;br/&gt;Der '''Dampfer „Pilot“''' lag in 14m Tiefe, nur die Mastspitze ragte eben aus dem Wasser.<br /> &lt;br/&gt;Trotz einer 4m dicken Schlickschicht ist es gelungen, unter dem Schiffsrumpf zwei Seile durchzuziehen. Am 13.10. gelang es schließlich, ihn vom Grund frei zu bekommen. Das '''Hebefahrzeug „Kraft“''' der Bugsier-Gesellschaft und die zwei eingesetzten Schlepper schleppten ihn in den Binnenhafen.
